You manufacture exclusive watches. And I mean exclusive. So much so that your customers will want to buy specific serial numbers from your limited series. A lucky number, a special date for them or their significant other, etc.
At the worlds biggest annual trade show in Basel you need to close sales rapidly or risk losing major deals. A distributor is requesting 40 different serial numbers of a particular model. Your ERP software does not cater for pre-selling particular serial numbers, so you and the other salespeople resort to keeping long lists in the notes field. While you manually go through a list of hundreds of non-sequential numbers to ascertain if your customer's wishes can be fulfilled, another client comes and goes.
You find that one of the numbers is not available. Customer asks "do you have another model with that number available?" You start sweating. "I'll have to get back to you on that one".
Back in the office, you realize that you hadn't seen one of his numbers had already been sold. You call your customer and tell him that that, too, is off. He's already 3000 miles away and had promised that number to his best customer. Relationship is at breaking point.
Note: Most ERP software will have a concept of serial number, but linked to the stock and therefore post-production. It is common in high end watchmaking to sell the watches and serial numbers before the watch is produced, making stock tracking useless for this exercise.
